links relative to current page rather than absolute

Issue Summary

I have menu items linking to node/12345 etc. When these are displayed as links in my submenutree block, they come out as /path/to/parent/of/current/page/node/12345. This should just be /node/12345 . Infact, it should actually be the alias of /node/12345

Sort of understand, but not quite. Can you give me (or point me to) an example?
