Using a new installation of Drupal 6.10, after increasing memory allocation to 128mb, I was still suffering from erratic WSODs.

I disabled the update status module and all appears to be fine. As I see it, Update Status can be activated at regular intervals to check status, and then deactivated to prevent WSOD's

I decided to try your solution ... with one little obstacle. I get a w.s.o.d when loading the module page. *gah* It's not that easy. Anyone with a hint how to disable the update ... through editing the SQL table perhaps?

Just search for updates in you database and it is in the system table.

Change the status to 0.

Should sort your problem.
