I am building a new Linux server as VPS within a XenServer 5.0 - only for hosting bunch of Drupal sites. I want to have a minimal Linux distribution that performs best for Drupal. I do not want any control panel. Ideally, ps -A should show minimal number of processes running (hopefully only few more than mysql, apache and php). I am considering using Gentoo 2008. Any ideas? Or experiences with Drupal on Gentoo as a VPS in XenServer 5.0?
Are there any known problems with Gentoo 2008 within XenServer for hosting Drupal production sites?
Thanks

Ubuntu Server LTS 8.04.2
We found that Ubuntu Server LTS is very stable and easy to work with if you can use the command line.

__rajeev, did you end up moving forward with your "Gentoo-VPS on Xen for Drupal" project?
Scothiam, how did your Turnkey Drupal sandbox turn out? Would you recommend implementing it for anything other than sandbox Drupal work?
Thanks,

I was trying to have Drupal
I was trying to have Drupal installed in a 256MB VPS in which I installed Gentoo VPS within XEN. I did not quite get the whole thing to work as expected and then abandoned the Gentoo path. I believe Gentoo requires minimal resources and is one of the fastest Linux distros. Hence, I tried to do that. If anyone else has been able to get this done, I would like to know. Thanks

Gentoo and Xen
Been running Gentoo with Linode for a couple of years ago, love it. I boot strapped Gentoo with a stage 1 install, it's lean and mean. There are also compiler optimizations for Xen, if you have problems finding them contact me and I'll send you my make.conf file.
So Gentoo works very nicely in a Xen VPS environment and very easy to maintain, love Portage ;)
well...
if you want to go real basic, there always ArchLinux for the webserver. I believe Linode.com has this available as a distribution option. Personally, if I did the VPS thing, I'd probably stick with Ubuntu (for support).
