the 6.x dev is very old - is Image Header in this version ready for production use?
shouldn't there be a new dev or final version?
is it still maintained?

Yes, Header Image is ready for production. The absence of a stable version is not the only indication of the status of a module. The module is still maintained but, the time I spend on this module is low.
