I guess the only way for Maxlength to work in a contact form, is to having such form as a node type....

no with

_maxlength_format_element(&$element, $field, $id, $type = '')

its possible to use every form element.
Does this helps you or should i write some example code?

This version of Maxlength is not supported anymore. The issue is closed for this reason.

Please upgrade to a supported version and feel free to reopen the issue on the new version if applicable.
