From the point fo view of a new Drupal user, there should be a link in all contributed module page which says something like "Installing contributed modules" so that new users don't install contributed modules in the root/modules directory. This link could link to http://drupal.org/node/70151

Title: Contributed modules » Add automatic link to "Installing" info on all contrib module pages
Project: Documentation » Drupal.org site moderators
Component: Correction/Clarification » Textual improvements
Category: task » feature

I think this is more of a d.o webmasters issue, rather than something that can be addressed in the Handbooks. I hope it's in the right Component.

The idea would be to add a link on all module Project pages (perhaps in the section where the "Documentation" and other project links go?) to the Installing Contrib Modules page (http://drupal.org/node/70151 as noted above).

As a correlary, it might be a good idea to do something similar on Theme projects, linking to http://drupal.org/getting-started/5/install-contrib/themes perhaps? There doesn't seem to be a corresponding page in Drupal 6, and the information is at least better than nothing.

I think it's a good idea...

Seems like a good idea-- changing to redesign component.
