Weights disappear on Drupal upgrade

I have used Weight to have categories of content display in lists in a particular order. I recently upgraded to D5.16 and all the weights have been reset to 0. Will it be necessary to re-do the weights each time that I upgrade Drupal?

I cannot figure out why upgrading Drupal would have done this. Did you disable the module and then re-enable it? In a certain order of doing this, you could have done it. When updating the underlying Drupal, there is no need to disable the module.

I have updated several times within the 5.x and 6.x branches. I even just upgraded from 5.16 to 6.10 on a site and the weights carried forward.
