language negotiation questions

hello,
i have a multi-lingual site, and i am using the locale and i18n module to control translated content. with these modules enabled i get a choice for which language i want present in the menu (this being done in site building>blocks>nicemenublockid). i can choose from my enabled languages or all languages. is there any sort of negotiation setting that can be used that automatically finds available menu items for the currently selected language?

as of now, i was able to create a solution by creating a second set of primary links that hold a separate language, but this seems more difficult to keep updated especially as the content translations should be maintained in a different way.
