How to read the DATE data type in webform?

i tried to read the DATE in a webform in the additioanl processing by using ['submitted_tree']['date'], but the result is "Array". I figured the date datatype is different than a textfield and i cant simply read it. But i couldnt find the funtion to do that. Can somebody tell me?
