Select a field type - Image or File

When creating a CCK imagefield, you can choose a field type of "Image" or "File", and use the "Image" as the widget. Does it matter which field type you use? It doesn't look like there is a difference, but was checking to see if there is in fact some subtle difference I can't figure out :)
