Drupal hosting - memory issue
Hi all,
tIme for a twist to one of the frequently asked questions around here:
I'm looking for a hosting service which will provide me with no less than excellent Drupal hosting.
I'm looking at opensourcehost.com right now (opensourcecms' hosting service).
I also took a peek at Site5.com
Does anybody have first person experience with this service?
I need the kind of hosting plan that is like OSHs Deluxe plan or better.
I need to host at least 3 domains, and want access to host a couple more.
I need to be able to host .dk domains (Denmark), which I have heard that OSH does.
ONE IMPORTANT ISSUE: I need memory. I have trouble loading a lot of modules on my present hosting service, as they allow only 8MB RAM. I will probably need at least 20MB (any suggestions?)
SSH, Lots of MySQL db's, GD and ImageMagick are a given.
Thanks in advance.

the host I use in the UK might be worth contacting..
HI Gunnar,
I was in a similar position a while back - with the exception of the .dk requirements - and I stumbled across a superb host based in the UK called Xeriom networks.
The guy who runs it loves Drupal and not only is his hosting very "Drupal friendly" when there's anything needed, you're not redirected half way across the world to be put on hold.
I used to host with a web farm in the uk called PIPEX/Webfusion that are very cheap, but, there was a lot of memory errors with some of the basic shared hosting accounts and on one account we were limited to 1 mysql database.
For a cheaper price, I got 20MB at xeriom with unlimited DBs..and they upped my memory from 20MB recently when I was testing something out.....without any grief or hassles when I asked. They're updating their site at the moment, but, you can still get in touch.
http://www.xeriom.net
hope that helps.

Actually no one seems to have answered the question
Actually no one seems to have answered the question, and it is a good question.
I haven't found the write answer yet, but media temple lets me open up to 70 megs of php execution memory on the grid server. (I think it required a .ini file edit)
I have been looking for something that offers better, but not luck. (most not even close)
My only issues with the media temple grid have been occasional multi-hour down time (every couple of months). Everything else about them is simply amazing. (on the memory aspect, I still have to limit upload sizes to 1.5 megs with doing on demand image cache resizing, get much larger and bam, memory wall. I assume I will hit the wall when I start video submissions)
On hostgator, I see a 40 meg limit, which I top out even when I view the security roles settings on one of my sites that has about 20 roles, and .. quite a lot of module
Been resisting a colo or such because of the time requirements when I used to have one.
Oh well, still looking for the answer
experience with both
I have used OSH and am currently using site5.com. I switched to site5 because this past year because
- site5 gives more bandwidth and storage for the price (maybe this has changed).
- the TRUE MultiSIte setup lets each full domain behave as if it is its own hosting account instead of using shared directory space. Each gets its own cpanel-style interface.
- OSH's SSH service would occassionally flake out on me and not let me connect via the command line and their VI editor was flaky, too.
So far, uptime and site access has been about the same. Service too. The one downside I can see so far for site5 is that upload_max_filesize is set at 2M and to override requires installing a local php.ini file in each directory.
As for the memory settings, I'm not sure of either. I do know, though, that I have had a site5 Drupal test site running with many contrib modules loaded.
My personal choice Jodohost...
I have tried a few diferent hosting companies and have been hosting with Jodohost for quite some time now. The thing I hated with most hosting companies was that their Control Panel had too few features and their disk space and bandwidth was too limiting. The control panel Jodohost uses has mind-blowing set of features. Their cheapest plan offers 3 domains, 200 MB, and i think 10 GB of bandwidth. The other best thing about them is that their support is the best I have seen anywhere. Check them out at http://www.jodohost.com
Take a look at site5
You get unlimited domains and subdomains, 5GB of storage, and 100GB of bandwidth for about the same price as that jodohost package.
Web Hosting Talk
There are a lot of special offers at http://webhostingtalk.com/ (from time to time you can find there better offers that the hosting companies are advertising for the public)
Also, at WHT you can find real life opinios and experience of different hosts.
My Choice is
Site5. I am running 6 Drupal sites with them on two different accounts, one Multisite Extreme and the other True Multisite Superhosting (they change the names and features of the plans often. but they are always essentially the same)
These guys are on the cutting edge of site hosting and provide features and service you wont find anywhere else.
I use Dreamhost
I use Dreamhost. I've there a website with > 200.000 users/month without any trouble. Plus some other smaller sites. All of them in the same account.
If you decide for them, write drupal as your promo code and you will get a discount.

I'm using dreamhost too
The only time I've had speed issues were I think one module or the db got gibbled on an update. Right now I'm using a firefox monitor to check load speed and it usually loads in 6 seconds for me. I'm using however my boyfriends codemonster account as he's given me space and done my domain things for me.
The few times I did have an issue with dreamhost they were prompt in getting to it. They were quite nice and did seem to have a clue. Not all hosting is that way in my experience.
For the curious the dreamhost server runs debian, offers squirrel mail, seems to cover most or all of the php modules needed. You do have to tell it to run php 5 from the web based command panel(they also run a web based interface to MySQL) if you want that vs version 4 which is their default. MySQL seems to be version 4.1.
To find out more about their system you can try their knowledge base:
https://panel.dreamhost.com/kbase/
And to find out about their plans:
http://dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html
They also have an affiliate plan which will save you money over time and as well over time they increase both bandwidth and disk space. (which is noted in the plan info above)
About their web panel:

If you needed less room and wanted a UK specific open source server. My ex has a site off of http://uklinux.net/ and says it is quite good. He runs a VNC page and Xplane related site off of his space there.
I'd recommend Dreamhost too
You may use this code, DFSLCGALL, to get the maximum discount from Dreamhost, and I'd suggest you choose the one year account, so you only have to end up paying 22 dollars for the first year.
But Dreamhost wants you to prepay for 10 years!
Prepay for 10 years??
Not to mention add ons like an ip address $3.95/mo and up to three phone calls back for tech support ($9.95/month) could add up.
I look for fast + reliable in a host.
