I've been seeing more and more recommendations lately that I should be using Panels 3 right now, as it's the one with a long-term future. As it is, I've been holding off in anticipation of an upgrade path from Panels 6x-2.0-alphaX to Panels 3. Is this an option yet, or would I still have to redo all the panels from scratch to upgrade?

Your guess is correct, there is not currently an upgrade path. I am going to be working on that in the next week or two, so that I can put out a beta (I have upgrade path as a beta requirement).

Forgive the newb comment, but does that mean I can just upgrade from 2 to 3 relatively smoothly? Do I have to do anything in particular other than install 3 and run update.php? WIll I lose all my panels?

@4 - questions should go into open/new issues, not into closed ones :)

You should back up your stuff before upgrading, just in case. If you can export things, go for it, as that may be easier to import than worry about the upgrade messing things up. It probably won't, but it's always good to have a backup!
