Just adding that there is interest in this, came here looking for the same thing myself.

I also need this functionality. Anybody have any advice on how to go about adding this functionality. Is it possible to do from within a custom module?

It looks like this is getting added in with Drupal 7.

At this point I am not really planing on adding any new features but will keep this open for now.
