the version of core you are using can be seen in administer -> status logs

you should always be using the latest release of Drupal core. updates put out are typically security and bug fixes. Thus yes, 6.10 is the version you should be using, provided you are actually using Drupal 6.x as your core.

Drupal 5.x modules won't work with Drupal 6.x and vice versa. Also of note jobsearch.module has only been released as a -dev version and is only suitable for testing on a test site to help locate and fix bugs.

Great info. Thanks! do you

Great info. Thanks!
do you know of another type of job search module that can perform a 'job' search?

I do not, but it seems to me you could do the same thing by building it with cck.module and views.module. Though doing so isn't for the faint of heart and should be done on a test site to work out the features you are expecting. I've no direct or indirect experience with jobsearch.module to know exactly what feature set it provides.
