Once enabled, the "More Like This" module logs 400 errors to the DB on every page access. The "Core search" and "Images" are working fine, though.

You most likely have a configuration error.

Read the Java logs and try to google for it. We also provide free Solr hosting at Acquia if you can't solve it.

If you post your log, I'll try to help anyway though.
