Making the output XHTML 1.0 strict [#404070]

While validating my site, I got one error caused by the addtoany module, which can be fixed very easily by replacing a

with a . As far as I could see it did not change the result's look.

Changing a div to a span made it validate XHTML 1.0 strict? Is there something I'm missing?
