Drupal Family...badly in need of help..!

I am trying to enable Image Module...! In the Garland default theme(6.10)..!

When i am configuring (Home › Administer › Site configuration -> Images), It is not taking the Default Image Path.
I am giving the Default image path as images because I have created images directory in the following path - /sites/default/files/images.

There is a following note below the Default Image Path : Subdirectory in the directory files where pictures will be stored. Do not include trailing slash..

But I tried giving the following paths

/sites/default/files/images
sites/default/files/images
images

for all the cases i get a message The directory does not exist.

Please help me ...Its consuming too much of my time..!
