is drupal 6 really ready for a site that uses thumbnails a lot?

i'm building a site that needs to launch in less than 90 days. like all the other sites i work on, it relies pretty heavily on the imagefield/imagecache combination to connect images to stories and then display those images at different sizes in different views.
i'm concerned by the issue queue for imagecache, which is full of apparently critical problems in its current state, and the fact that cck imagefield is still in beta.
is drupal 6 really the right thing for me to use at this point? or do i need to build one more site in drupal 5?

I don't know about the cck
I don't know about the cck stuff - I really get turned off by that method of adding content.
But I came across a beautiful little module the other day, which looks in the body for an image,
resizes it into a thumbnail (using imagecache), and places the clickable thumb into the teaser
whilst filtering out any full-size images which would accidentally appear in the teaser.
It is compatible with views. But I think it only produces one size/style of teaser-thumbnail.
