Hi,

if you choose to set a path manually for a node it happens that next time you edit the node automatic path naming will be aktivated again and override the formerly set manual path. This can cause 404 errors etc...

Would be better if a node with a manually set path would have pathauto deaktivated permanently!

Choose the "Create new alias. Leave existing alias functioning" in the pathauto setting. Then old aliases will stay.

I think you are talking about #180440: If an alias is manually created, don't automatically replace it on edit. Please help support the work there.

Also, consider using http://drupal.org/project/path_redirect - if Path Redirect is installed then Pathauto will leverage it to automatically forward people.
