Webmail module

Is there a working webmail module? I really need one for a community site I'm configuring. In the past, I tried using Pontomail, but this seems to be abandoned. At the moment I try to use Webmail Plus with version 6, but I don't get it working decently either. There is an integration module for Roundcube, but it's for version 5.
One of the problems I see with Drupal is the relentless pace of the core development. A lot of module don't get adapted for the newer version and are often abandoned at the end. Couldn't there be a pause in core development and spent the time on helping module developers? It would make Drupal much more useful.
