this profile takes forever to install, so breaking down some of the longer running tasks a bit more in batch api would probably be a good idea so that users can actually see progress during the install.

Sounds good. However, did you update your copy of project.module? It goes a lot faster after I committed #408084: Remove unnecessary menu_rebuild() from hook_taxonomy().

yes, i updated it. the install profile is still huge and takes a bit to finish.
