As per a suggestion from Todd Ross Nienkerk:

Add support for backticks to force a right-side, curled single quote. This would allow users to add proper single quotes for words like `tis and `90s (as in "the 1990s").

Is this especially complicated because it involves doing some stuff SmartyPants is already touching?

In all honesty, I haven’t really had the time to look at it yet, but it may be fixable by tweaking SmartyPants’ configuration.
