I just discovered that while drupal.org is down, I can't access my Administer section of my two Drupal installs. As soon as drupal.org came back up, access was regained.

I'm guessing this has to do with the available updates check, which I'm now changing from "daily" to "weekly".

Is there anything else I can do to prevent this from happening in the future?

I was wondering about this too. I didn't make the correlation right away, but saw this post which triggered my light bulb.

I am running on Drupal 6.10 and this happened to me as well.

Btw, anybody know what happened?
