The calendar seems to expand and become greyed out when noone is logged into the site looking at the event calendar. How can I make it so the event block calendar shows the same for all roles?

An update to the latest module has fixed the front page, however login pages and some others for anonymous visitors still show a greyed out calendar.

Event for Drupal 8 is unrelated to older versions. If an issue similar to this one exists, please open a new issue with the 8.x branch.
