Currently, from what I can tell, the grouping field in views (in the GMap style settings) allows you to group by fields but displays the 'groups' as separate maps.
Is it possible to instead show the groups as markers?

For example: I choose to group by my 'country' field. I then get one map which shows all nodes with location data, grouped by country (i.e. one marker per country where there is one or more nodes). You could then theme the info window that pops up using .tpl.php files.

This could also be used for other things, not just location fields...
