The core issue is that I want to have two content regions (lets say left & right).

We should be able to add blocks into them from the menu like we add blocks generally.

I actually want to use drupal for web news paper!

Have you looked in the theme section (under downloads, at the upper right)? There are at least 15 such themes, perhaps more (Acquia-Marina, Newsflash, Analytic, Newswire, are a few).
