Description

I'm interested in taking over maintainership (or would like to be a co-maintainer) of the Akismet module. I use this module on several personal and work sites and have already begun working on code. (an initial patch can be found: http://drupal.org/node/285613#comment-1412212 with my initial changes)

1 vote for hyrcan!

I will occasionally help since I need a working akismet module too.

You may want to post a request over at http://drupal.org/project/issues/webmasters since this module is pretty much abandoned right now.

I was giving it the suggested 2 weeks for eaton to respond before doing that. But thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry got busy at work.

It's been the recommended two weeks, so I'll go escalate this over to webmasters.

edit:
Also for those of you following along at home, I'll be rolling a new patch this weekend that should get things usable in 6.x.

Hi, I have expanded Akismet module so that user can use Defensio or TypePad AntiSpam services instead of Akismet service. I have fixed many remaining issues and applied most of the pending patches posted here. Now everything seems to be working OK with Drupal 6.x.

The reason I started working on this is because Akismet is not free for commercial sites, while TypePad Antispam service is free for commercial sites too. Then I decided to do more by adding Defensio service which has some unique features you can not see in other services.

Anyway, I am wondering if I should release as a patch to Akismet module, or derive a new project 'AntiSpam' module since this module support not only Akismet but also other antispam services. This module also take advantage of a feature of 'spaminess (spam rating)' of Defensio so that you can resort spams based on spaminess.

I am thinking of releasing it first at my web site and then think about how to release this module by hearing people's opinion.

First, I'd definitely like to try it out! (I've been wanting to give Defensio a try - but has their activity on the project decreased? Not a lot of action on their fourms.)

I'm thinking that a new module/name would be in order if you've added that many services.

silverwing,

Thanks for your comment. Give me a few days so that I can do a bit more beta testing by myself first.
Then, I will post it here as an attachment so that people can give it a try.

Attached is the screenshoot of the moderation queue when Defensio is used. You can see the spaminess of each spam with nice level gauge.

If you need another set of eyes on it, let me know.

Hi,

Attached is the beta-release of the AntiSpam module which is developed based on the Akismet module as I said before.
The differences between this module and Akismet module are

1) This module is compatible with Drupal 6.x (many bug fixes, thanks to those who has provided pathes here too).
2) It supports not only Akismet but also TypePad AntiSpam, or Defensio services (you can select the one you like)
3) It has added a statistics page which shows the stastics of the antispam activity with nice graphic charts.
4) If Defensio is used as a service provider, it takes advantage of the 'Spaminess' value returned from Defensio.
and more to come??

Anyway, if you are interested in and would like to try it out, please test it and let me know your opinion and/or bug report. I am thinking of releasing this module as a new module.

This module does uses the different database and does not share the data with existing Akismet module. If you use this module, please disable Akismet module to avoid any possible conflict.

Thank you,

Thanks for your hard work on this!

When I enable Defensio, I get the "WARNING: Your API Key doesn't seem to be valid!" (which I don't get with my Akismet or Typepad API keys.) I'm not sure if it's because I just created the key (probably not) or something else. I'll check it again this weekend.

Thank you for the possible bug report. I will look into it too and let you know if I find something.

BTW, I have talked with drewish (the maintainer of the Akismet module) about the module and he said that he no longer have intention to maintain and keep the Akismet module up to date. So I am going to create a new project 'AntiSpam' and take over the module.

Besides, I can not support Drupal 5.x with AntiSpam module since I do not use Drupal 5.x at all. For those who uses Drupal 5.x can still use the Akismet module since 5.x version does not have the compability issue like 6.x has.

I will set-up 'AntiSpam' module at Drupal.org sometime next week.

I have created a new project AntiSpam. Please visit http://drupal.org/project/antispam for more detail and issues.

hyrcan,

Are you still planning to take over this project? I couldn't find the request for ownership in the webmasters issue queue.

I ask because whether this project is maintained or not does have some ramifications for other projects that would integrate with anti-spam solutions.

Gnassar: Have you tried the Antispam Module, it supports Akismet, TypePad AntiSpam, and Defensio.

I'm a big fan of TypePad AntiSpam, as it's completely free even for commercial use and performs as well as Akismet.

I noticed the home page of the Akismet module mentions Mollom, it'd be great if we could also list Antispam.

re: #19 - I added the link to the antispam page on the akismet page.

gnassar - August 11, 2009 - 07:01

Well, I guess if we're adding links for alternatives, you could always link to the only native Drupal anti-spam solution :-).

http://drupal.org/project/spam

I'm sure the lack of a third-party dependency appeals to some people. It's also modular and includes an API, so other developers can plug in support for whatever internal or external spam filter they want and it can work in unison with all other enabled filters, simultaneously.

Be great if future efforts get rolled into the AntiSpam module.
