When enable the avatar_selection module, it delete the comment permissions.
If I rewrite these, to the permission table: access comments, post comments, post comments without approval
...it works fine again.

I can't reproduce this issue. Is there any chance you were using a cached version of the page? or were disabling the comments module accidentally? Or would anyone else have been making changes on the system at the same time?
