Well, I'm not sure that including menu trails in core is the best solution, but I think Drupal core should support a function like that.

So when one sets secondary links to work as children of primary links and select one of the secondary links, the parent primary links item should stay as "active".

For those not familiar, check out the Menu Trails project page. I think this would be a great addition to Drupal core. Definitely the first bullet point mentioned on the above page, if not the second and third.
