I remember seeing a slideshow module that dims the original page in the BG and shows the slideshow on top of the original page in a new layer.. I dont remember the name though. can someone tell me the name of it?

There are quite a few, though the original generic term for such functionality is "lightbox". For a good comparison see http://drupal.org/node/266126 (though there are probably more than are compared on that page now).
