Hi there,

I'm looking at putting my site online at the moment. Host Gator and Host Monster both seem to receive good press, although I've seen reports of problems relating to Clean URLs. Does anyone have any recommendations with respect to my final choice - good, bad experiences?

Intrestingly Host Monster will give me a free domain name. This sounds great, but I'm wondering whether this domain will actually be mine should I come to leave them for example. They don't mention renewal fees for the domain name either...is it mine forever in that case?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Richard

Both HostGator and

Both HostGator and HostMonster are pretty good, I have Drupal sites hosted in both.

HostMonster looks more cost effective, it's very fast, but only concerns is that it has very strict resource usage control, once your site use too many CPU resource, then your account will be suspended for 10 minutes. And HostGator looks better in terms of resource limitation.

Host Gator works really well

I like Host Gator for Drupal. We use their dedicated service and have many sites hosted.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND DRUPALVALUEHOSTING.COM They are the most unreliable, poorly supported, worst web hosting service I have ever encountered. If you are designing professional sites and expect any sort of reliability, I'd stay away. I had sites down for two entire days with absolutely no response from them.

host monster has CPU

host monster has CPU limitation, it will be a problem if your website become popular with high traffic. Hostgator will cause less trouble because they are the real pro.

Yes, Hostmonster will give you one domain forever as long as you host this domain with them.

I have never had a problem with Hostgator

I switched from 1n1 hosting which I had a lot of issues with in terms of limits on my account. The main reason I switched to Hostgator was that they have just about no limits on the account. I can make as many databases as I want, host as many domains I want, and all they limit really is the total amount of files on the account. I have actually reviewed their services on my site, and think I did a good job of putting down the facts.

I've been with Hostgator since Nov 2007. All I can recall is good and reliable service, nothing else.

REALLY difficult to work with

I use them for all my domain stuff, but for hosting: STAY AWAY. Really, really hard to work within their limitations.

HostGator is a much safer option.

subdomains

Does anyone know if hostgator will let you have unlimited subdomains?

Yes, hostgator will allow you

Yes, hostgator will allow you to create unlimited subdomains, this is included in all their 3 shared hosting packages.

Want to setup a Drupal site, find the best Drupal Hosting for it now.

It depends on what you want to do with your site, I have seen huge drupal sites on both work well, however both are shared hosting! I will have to get a page going to recommend hosts again, I would suggest calling both of them and seeing who answers first customer support is always the top reason to choose a host in my book!

We move all sorts of websites day in and day out. Try EZSiteMove to move your next site. Because we move so many sites we really know hosting companies well. We know the pro's and con's for just about every host out there.....

Host Gator runs Drupal fine

I've been on their Baby Croc plan for 3-4 years now. I have multiple wordpress and Drupal installs running on 6 domains - all for $8/month. You simply can't beat it.

domain name change with Host Monster

I just called Host Monster today about this very question. Within 30 seconds, I was transferred to a service rep named Liz who answered this question. Liz said if I decided to change my host from Host Monster and wanted to keep the domain name, it would only cost a $10 transfer fee. She also said they could keep the domain name parked at Host Monster for $10/yr. I'll think I'll try using them based on drupal reviews, fast customer support, and the rate: 24 months/$3.95 mo. with lots of drupal support on their site. Now let's hope it will deliver!

I've been with Host Monster a while now

I've been with Host Monster for a while now - about 5 months. To start with there was quite a bit of down time, but over the last three months there's been virtually none at all - I must have been on about 99.9% uptime.

Customer service is good on the whole. I've spoken to 3 or 4 people and only one of them was unprofessional, the rest provided excellent service.

The cpanel provides adequate features and is user-friendly.

One thing which has come to light recently are reports that they impose a limit on the number of files which you can host of 50,000. This sounds like a lot, but with a few Drupal installs you could easily hit this. This is something which I've read on a few internet forums etc. I can believe it as when you do a file count check via their cpanel the email address which they provide should you require a recount is 'abuse' - which to me would indicate that having too many files is somehow in breach of their policy.

Hold times are very short if you have to phone them. The chat service also works well.

On the whole I'd probably recommend them. Their service hasn't been part of the stress which I've faced since I began building my site, but it's worth clarifying the file number limit issue with them if you plan on hosting multiple large sites.

I use them for my site: www.ishigaki-japan.com

Hope that helps,

Rich

Have been w/ HostGator

Have been w/ HostGator running Drupal for several years now.

Running I forget how many instances of Drupal on 6 different accounts.

They are not ideal, but they more than meet 80:20 criteria. (I'd say 90:10 for the stuff we've done.) Very inexpensive, and the chat-based help is always available. We have had no uptime issues.

I have reason to believe that their MySQL config is not very optimal for Drupal and will be looking at other hosts for our next two projects. However, for a low-usage site, HostGator will be fine. And they place no barriers to exit, so they're a safe choice for portability.

Shoudl also mention BlueHost,

Shoudl also mention BlueHost, which is a little more expensive but seems to work well. (One of our clients uses them.) Again, though, reason to believe they may not be optimal from a MySQL perspective.

Drupal 6 works great on both for me

I think either Hostmonster or Hostgator will work fine. I have accounts with both and they host several Drupal powered sites for me with no issues. FYI Hostmonster is also the same company as Bluehost so there is no difference between the two services.

I recently wrote a couple tutorials on how to get Drupal 6 up and running with Hostmonster and Hostgator. Here they are...

File limit

Are you anywhere near hostmonster's 50,000 file limit chasesagum? If so, have you had any warning emails etc (I'm way off it by the way at about 5000).

blogapi with hosting

Hi,

Is blogapi works well with bluehost / hostmonster? It does not work with my current hosting :(

The error is like "POST /xmlrpc.php HTTP/1.1" 404 2926 "-" "Apache XML RPC 3.0 (Jakarta Commons httpclient Transport)" in raw log. Does it mean they block xmlrpc ?

Hostgator has limitation

Hostgator has great support but with hosting Drupal I had to ask for 128M to run my site. I ended up leaving because file manager only allowed 25 meg upload. You can use FTP but I some times make changes from work and FTP is not an option. My current host allows 1 gig upload on File manager.

My current host is http://www.iNFRENION.com They support video hosting I have no complaints other than support is via chat.

Hostgator is best

Hostmonster and Bluehost are run by same management and hence are very similar and both have CPU throttling , file limitation, overloaded servers and thus not suitable for long term.

1. Hostmonster looks cheap especially if you take advantage of promotional price of $3.95 per month. But later it will be $8.95 per month for renewals. So, long term its price is almost equal to that of hostgator.

2. If you are not a novice in website creation and SEO and you know how to make a successful websites that can get 1000+ visitors, then hostmonster is not for you. When you create a new account with them, all works well, but as they overload the servers, you start seeing frequent down times and CPU throttling for no reason on part of your websites. They simply can't handle high traffic websites.

3. If you have more that 50,000 files on your account, (3 Forums and 10 Wordpress blogs are enough to reach this limit) you start seeing a note in c-panel that you need to keep the number of files under 50,000 they will also stop taking backup of your websites in this case. The same limitation in case with hostgator is 2,50,000 files/inodes. And they really don't have problems with high traffic websites.

4. Hostmonster Customer support ( Rep. I chatted with - Mr Jack) closed the chat window themselves and in this case, if you try to email chat transcription to your email, it just does not reach your email inbox. In short, they provide poor customer support.

5. Hostmonster has no up-gradation plan that can suit needs of your growing hosting needs. If you experience CPU throttling, the hostmonster support will try to upsell and suggest you to go for better server at the cost of $19 per month. But this really is no solution as you still experience CPU throttling. So, a $6/mo server is better that $19/month server.

With HostGator you have real upgradation plans that work. A customer support that cares and will go beyond your expectations to satisfy customers. They are real professionals.

If you still go for hostmonster and experience problems 1 year down the line then blame it on your self.

Lavanay
I have already moved my high traffic websites to hostgator. But I am stuck with hostmonster as I had purchased 3 year hosting with them. I still host less traffic blogs with them like http://jobsworkingfromhome.org etc

I've been working with

I've been working with Hostgator for several years now. I've tried Bluehost, ANHosting, Media Temple, a couple flavors of Verio, and Godaddy, as well as a VPS at Network Solutions, and three different IIS hosts (all of which were awful).

Strongly recommend against MediaTemple. They are a smoke and mirrors outfit -- all hype, and if you're not a mega-player, they will not be living up to it. If you're a Fortune 1K company, they'll probably treat you right, but don't look to them for workaday hosting. Nobody should host on Godaddy for anything but static pages, IMO. Verio looks like a decent value if you have to please corporate IT masters but are still trying to be cost-conscious.

Of all I've used, Hostgator has the best customer service by a hair. Verio were also very helpful, but they are also more expensive and their control panel is more restrictive and is difficult to work with. (Verio went so far as to recommend an "upgrade" that would cost my client less than what they were paying, and the tech seemed to really understand what he was talking about -- which is rare.) Beyond those two, no one came close on customer service.

ANHosting comes highly recommended by other Drupalers, but I've had performance issues with them. Performance was never very good, and often quite poor, on their servers. Features are excellent for the price, so they're probably a good bet, but they do have no upgrade path.

Right now, I'm having significant performance issues with all of my Hostgator shared hosting. They will make an effort to do something about it if you contact them about performance issues, but I'm reaching the conclusion over time that there's not a heck of a lot you can do about poor performance on a shared host, once it starts to go downhill, short of moving to a VPS.

I recently priced out VPS solutions, and put a client onto a VPS at Hostgator. So far it's been great. Not cheap, but not the most expensive, either. The upgrade process (shared to VPS) was pretty straightforward, and much faster than they quoted.

Hostmonster is cheaper than

Hostmonster is cheaper than hostgator, but the CPU usage and Ram Hostgator >> Hostmonster about 2-3 times.

The Bandwidth I think Hostmonster = Hostgator.
Two hosts have a great service and support.

what does "Drupal hosting" actually mean?

i am about to build a fairly simple site for a friend and from what i reckon i have 2 options:
1. Build everything locally and then move it to the live server with any good host
2. Use one of the hosting companies that offer "install with one click Drupal" - and from there i can add modules/themes/ make changes in files etc.

Can you point me in the right direction, what do you usually do? Its a free site for a friend, but needs to be reliable as she will use it for business purposes, she can pay as much as needed for reliable hosting (not too much traffic is expected...but potentially who knows)

THanks in adv

2 years with Hostmonster,

2 years with Hostmonster, started as novice, now an intermediate. i don't think you will be disappointed with any hostmonster or hostgator or bluehost. the only reason if i ever change from hostmonster to upgrade for a service that might not be available , which is not the case at the moment.

Hot Drupal for your friend

I've used these guys and very reliable, know Drupal and good price and levels of programs.

After 18 months

After 18 months of using hostmonster I'd have to say that I've been very impressed on the whole. There have been periods of downtime - in fact, I seem to be having at least 5-10 minutes a day at the moment, but this is unusual - but on the whole uptime has been impressive. Having said that, my traffic is low at around 500 page views a day. It's difficult to really test a provider with such low figures.

Upping the php memory limit to meet my requirements was no problem.

Control panel / email facilities etc - no complaints.

Support has been good where required, although I did have a scary experience with on operator who made changes to my setup without asking any security details. However, in all other cases support has been fast and effective.

The only common complaint which I hear is that they occasionally shut down sites which are running over the 50,000 file limit. This may become an issue if you're running a large site.

Still, as a 'starter' provider there's little to moan about.

Host Gator

I have been with hostgator for over 2 years and I absolutely love it so far. No idea about Host monster.

Install Boost

Recently hostmonster really started to slow down for me so I decided to check out the Boost module. The result - an incredible performance increase. If your site's content doesn't change too much I'd highly recommend it. It's like night and day if you're on a busy shared server.

Hostmonster is a shared

Hostmonster is a shared hosting, it a good choice for the beginner as Drupal could run pretty fast in their environment. But once you need more resource with the increased complexity or traffic of your site, then you need to move to VPS hosting, in this case, Hostmonster doesn't have VPS or Dedicated server solution. Hostgator will be a good choice then.

Personally, I never recommend

Personally, I never recommend VPS solutions.

I had my own VPS hosting company and there are only two way to have money from it: oversell it or price should be more than $50 for minimal configuration.

In web hosting industry, you

In web hosting industry, you can treat anything not dedicated as overselling, which is true for Shared hosting, vps hosting, cloud hosting, etc. The key is how you make the overselling cannot be felt by your customers and give the level of service you have guaranteed to them.

Leve 6 with Host Gator

I read a post recently where a person who was experiencing problems with shared hosting was advised by Host Gator that he'd require at least a level 6 option in order to see an improvement in performance.

In my opion the 3 key options are:

Install boost - free and incredibly effective for sites whose content doesn't change too continuously.

High-spec VPS.

Dedicated server...this is the only way that you can really be sure of the level of performance that you're likely to see. Plus, it will put you in that 'very special customer' club in your provider's eyes should you have problems.

If I had the money I'd go for a dedicated server with boost...that would really fly.

Hostmonster Supports Clean URLs

Hostmonster Supports Clean URLs "out of the box" in my experience (both Drupal 5 and 6). I've never had to do any tweaking. Bandwidth seems okay too. And its cpanel. Nuff said?
The web hosting provider to avoid at all costs is Siteground. Don't even go there!

Do not adjust your mind;
reality is at fault.

Hostgator support Clean URLs

Hostgator support Clean URLs as well. I believe this is common features from most of web hosts.
