My CMS Can Kick Your CMS's Ass

kriskrug - December 21, 2005 - 07:10

So this past September I was at a conference called Web of Change up in beautiful British Columbia. Shockingly, there were almost as many women at this event as men, and one of the great geek girls I met was the coordinator, Sarah Pullman.

Since this year's conference she's been hanging out with the Vancouver Drupal geeks and determined to learn to use the platform (and other web tools) to help social change organizations and other people doing good for the world get their message out. She's just started her first couple of sites on the Bryght platform...

Of course I had to hook her up with a t-shirt, so she could spread the Drupal love across the land.

Wow, I had no idea such a conference existed. That's awesome.

I'm actually going to be doing a speaking tour on such matters this Spring, and it will definitely include a lot of Drupal examples/plugging. I'll certainly post more (and solicit suggestions, for sure!) once it comes time to actually put my presentations together.

Web of Change

sarahfelicity - December 21, 2005 - 18:52

Flufftronix --

It's a great event, full of inspiring people working at the intersection of technology and social change. The website needs some work but I think we'll get it up and running on Drupal in the new year, so be sure to check back and consider applying if you think it's up your alley!

So, Sarah, how does it feel to be Miss Drupal 2005?

Another good reason to go: http://drupal.org/conference-vancouver-2006.

Maybe we should organize a meet and greet with Miss Drupal 2005? ;-)

The Monks of Planet Drupal

Nick Lewis - December 21, 2005 - 12:33

This is hilarious. What are we? A bunch of monks, banished to planet drupal, who haven't seen a female in 20 years?* Is drupal-con going to be like alien III?

Okay, I'm just jealous that there aren't any woman in Austin, Texas who are dateable (e.g. under 30) and would wear such a t-shirt. We ain't got no fancy drupal users group. No sir -- just me and my intern: we are the Austin Drupal Users Group. I think I'll have to fly up there this Feb and represent.

She's sure stunning - I know.
No need to ad the Druplicon - as it is served here twice in the most perfect natural form.

Now go get a life boys!

I'm thinking I should hook my Docking Station (sorry, unavoidable geek joke) up with some drupal lingerie or baby-doll tees, what does everyone reckon?

(Sorry, the site runs on Joomla at the moment, have not had the time to port it over to Drupal! I sincerely apologize to the drupal community for putting you through this. At least the Photo Gallery is in Gallery2...)

I think the server is running a little slowly at the moment as well, for some reason.

ZOMG

"Important news: woman uses a computer".

I'd usually be the last person to complain about photos of women, but how about we promote some of the more interesting and technical forum threads to the front page, too?

Women in Technology

sarahfelicity - December 21, 2005 - 19:09

You know, I know for a fact that there are lots of kick-ass women out there in the technology field, and more specifically working in the open-source world. I also know that there are WAY more men than women, and I think that needs to shift.

I'm glad you all liked the photo (taken in a silly moment after Kris gave me the shirt, though yes I do actually use and really like Drupal) and I'm glad if it was a change of pace from the usual technical content of the forums, but I'd also encourage you all to be encouraging - professionally - of the women working in your community, and to find ways to get more of them in there and feeling welcome.

The power of these tools is huge, the potential to transform community online is tremendous, and we need to work on making them more widely available, and more easily understood and adopted. We need more women who can talk geek AND bring it to the mainstream.

Just my $0.02, with thanks to all the women who have worked so hard before me.

Sarah

More on Women in Technology

BryanSD - December 22, 2005 - 06:43

Wow, everybody got quiet on this thread when the woman actually shows up. :-)

Sara, I had a chance to look at your blog and actually put it in my favorites before visiting here. With my primary background in the sciences (Atmospheric Science and for a while doubling in Environmental Studies), it's sad to say that women are few in number not only in IT but also in the sciences and engineering. I've seen a number of organizations do all they can to try to recruit more women into the "geek" fields and yet, the numbers pretty much remain the same. I wish it would take more than just encouragement to get women in the profession, but there seems to be something else also needed. What that something else is, I don't really know.

I will say, you're right we need to get more women into IT if we're ever going to allow the IT (and Drupal) culture to become more mainstream. In the mid 90s, as a meteorologist I started working with my agency's Website. I was good at it and was able to transition into IT very easily. However, that Website didn't really mature until I began working on the site with another fellow meteorolgist who also happened to be a woman. Her contributions literally transformed that site from Black & White to full living color. You ought to see what she has done lately with PHP and MySQL!

There's actually a fair

sepeck - December 22, 2005 - 07:57

There's actually a fair number of women actively contributing on and to Drupal. In the form of patches, support forums and docs.

same here. My daugter's first word was "tux". Now she masters some 40 words, one of them being drupal (she smiles saying it). Move over Dries!

thank you for your thoughts

Bèr Kessels - December 23, 2005 - 10:20

You are entirely correct.

A while ago, http://drupal.org/node/4877#comment-7695 we had a small discussion on this. Obviously 'getting more women to join' should not be a goal itself. 'getting a more diverse team' or 'opening up he community to not only a hapy few geeks' or something in those lines is.

I am not surprised to see, that more women join Drupal. It show Drupal is not entirely technical.

(Allright, that needs some clarificaion, i guess :) not insulting anyone, but i speak from a rather nasty experience. During my studies in Amsterdam (aviation, industrial and marine technologies) we had a women/man ration of 300/2 in our department. :/ )

Drupal has become multifaceted, and it thus appeals to more diverse people. hell, we even have designers these days :)

now, back to the point. Encouraging -profesionally- women to work in the community. or better, encouraging -profesionally- a more diverse developer (= contributors) base (which, i'd like to stress is not the same as a diverse user base) .

* open up the communication by providing more ways of communication. IRC, forums, blogs and ML appeals to certain folks only.
* open up, by meeting Real Life. We did that, it worked.
* listen better. We are very good at that (imo), but it can be improved. We should listen to what people around us say and learn from that. Silly example: if 200 people say drupal sucks for installing, they might have a point, even if we don't think so.
* Collaboration. even more then now,on different fields. I beleive nothing is more fun that to dive into a certain part or issue with a few people to fix a certain issue. It helps newer people, it brings people together, it feels more confortable for new people or for people in doubt if 'they belong to this community'.
