There are lot of books on our site, created using the book module. We want to have a link on the side which takes to that. This can also be in the primary/secondry links. Whats the URL which will take us to the page which shows books. I tried playing out with blocks and having a "book" block on the right sidebar, but it does not show up

The menu module comes with Drupal.

Go to administer >> modules and enable "menu" module.

First, go to administer >> content >> books
Select the book you want to put on the menu, and move the mouse over the book parent node (where it says "view"), and note down the path (/node/5, for example).
Now go to administer >> menus
Then, click on tab "add menu"; type in a title ("books", or whatever) and hit submit.
Then go to administer >> blocks and enable "books", or whatever).
Then, go back to administer >> menus and click on "add menu item", and type in the title, a description if you want, and the path which you noted down from administer >> content >> books; BE SURE to choose the new menu as the "parent item".

Unless I have been unclear, or have missed something, that should do it.
