Still digging into hosting my drupal site (and maybe 1/2 other sites as well), and it is not easy.
Site5 was mentioned (saw some negative reviews about them),
Dreamhost (positive reviews, only negative once about CPU limit exceeding),
Hostingmatters (no bad reviews found -> must be good then)
Opensourcehost (no review found -> must be a good sign)

Now I also came across VPS. Is any member of the drupal environment hosting on a VPS? And if so.... with which company?

I use three VPSes, nd the feelings are mixed.

Linode is great,I developed a site there, and love it.
furthermore I run approx 20 sites on Lycos, which I dislike a lot. Very unstable. Though they have solved most issues by now, and have proven rather stable the last two months.

But all in all, I think VPSes are by far the best choice if you start up a site. You should look for programs to upgrade to your own server too, though. If your site takes off, you do not want it to have to go down for a few days to move it!

I use a Linode as a backup solution and find their offereings to be featureful, prices competitive and support and user community excellent. While it doesn't offer the power that a full server would (it can't, its a VPS) it does let you do whatever you want since you are root and is definetly an ideal way to start off on a site. Linode also offers you the option to purchase add-ons, such as more RAM, in case your needs grow.

I'm using a VPS...I just got tired of not finding what I really wanted in shared hosting plans. I use http://dakotahosting.com for my VPS. Their shared hosting plans don't cover the lock tables priviledge, so I wouldn't recommend the shared hosting plans. (Disclosure: Dakota Hosting is mine and the site is a resller for GoDaddy).

I think most VPS from one company to the next is pretty much about the same, with differences in price mostly stemming from how much support you get. With VPS you're pretty much running the show...and there are pros and cons to that. For example, if I make a tweak on my server that causes it to crash...well you only have you to dig yourself back out of the hole. If you're comfortable with server administration, a VPS is the way to go. I'm much happier now than I was with shared hosting plans.

use not managed VPS-system, but I am a complete newbie and had someone develop my drupal Website. We encountered just recentely severe problems with my hosting company (too many connections).

Anyone on a managed VPS system?

dreamhost got 2 bad reviews on 49365.
i have a thread at 52711 looking for dedicated hosting.
rimu has been recommended with no negative reviews so far.

my osh account has experienced frequent short downtimes (less than one minute). no vps there.

I posted this question before I finally decided for OSH (shared hosting).
Like said before: no frequent short downtimes what so ever. It must have something to do with you building it online (while you are logged in). Did you ever experienced downtime when you where not logged in?

when a user went to the site for the first time it was down (didn't make a good impression)
however, i had one a week ago and none since, so that's less than before (3 to 4x in one week) even though I was on heavily.

perhaps they had a problem with another site and talked to them.
thanks for letting me know. sr didn't have any trouble either but she doesn't visit the site much.

I've used Jumpline.com VPS hosting for several drupal sites now. They've been around forever and are pretty stable. They're bandwidth and speed are not the best around but they are very dependable and you can actually talk to a real person over the phone if you need.

The downside is the apache config file needs to be adjusted before you can fully enable drupal (just have to change the allow access from none to all all in the config). Also, their default mysql install does not support civicspace.

I started with this whole thing about 4-months ago. (web hosting that is). i first set up an Apache server, strictly by the manual on my home computer (Windowx XP), then looked for a Host. I choose Westhost. They have live JAVA-Chat for support (which I have over used extensively ;-p ) as well as phone support ( I hate phones). They do not offer Drupal but do offer a nice package. You have Total server control. The nice thing is that they have a VPS-Reset, kinda like reseting your Apache Server at home. I have been Extremely Happy with their service and Support. They know their stuff and If they didn't I would drop them immediatly. I am no expert, just a guy trying to get a job done.
This Drupal Community and Westhost have helped me achive some goals in a very short time.

Thank You Drupal Guy's!

Hi.

I'm also looking for a hosting solution. The Westhost prices for a VPS are tempting.

Which plan are you on and how much guaranteed RAM (not burstable). I notice this information is not obscured on the Westhost website.

Are you still happy with the speed, stability and service?

Thanks.

This is the result of a search on WestHost member site for RAM. See what you think and report back.

They are the only service I have had and I am very pleased with their services.
