As an alternative to CAPTCHA, I want to add required profile fields and include them in the registration page. Hopefully to deter these bots.

A member suggested this, but didn't advise on how to implement it. Can you please explain how I can add these required fields in the registration page.

And using this method, is it possible to force registrars to type something in a textbox in order to continue with registration?

Go to admin/user/profile

- Add fields like Name, Email, Phone....etc you have option to various types of fields. And them make all of them(or some) mandatory. This way user has to fill up the required information in order to proceed with registration process. Hope this will help.

Note: if don't get admin/user/profile then enable your profile module.
