I have a taxonomy with a single vocabulary that contains several deep hierarchies. Thinking about it a bit more, I'd rather have several separate vocabularies that are a little less deep. I don't see anything in the UI that lets me do that. Is there a trick I'm missing?

You can edit the taxonomy and just redirect who the parent is for each term of a vocabulary, even making a sub term move up to the root of the vocabulary.

If you are talking about creating new vocabulary and then moving the terms under this vocabulary, you will probably have to make the edits in the database using SQL. Either that or create the new vocabulary with the new terms, and just edit each node via the administration form (turning off the old vocabulary and enabling the new vocabulary).

I was talking about creating a new vocabulary and moving existing terms to that vocabulary. You confirmed what I suspected... it has to be done with SQL editing hacks. :-( I'll file a feature request on that one.
