OK I've narrowed it down, thought it was a bug with Drupal but deactivated the Mod and that resolved the issue. What happens is even though I set Drupal updates to check weekly with fastpath_fscache activated it now fetches available updates every cron run. Major hassle since recommendation is to have cron run every 5 - 15 min's.
