I am trying to embed videos from universities. In reading through all the issues, it seems like that I need to make a new include file in the providers directory for every site I want to embed videos from.

Question 1: is that correct?

But in http://drupal.org/node/286478 (about embedding videos from newsweek.com), the developers talk about a patch. To me, a patch is different from an include file.

Question 2: do I make a new include file and patch the emfield module?

Maybe, but it really depends. In this case I would probably suggest making a seperate module that hooks into emfield. For an example see http://drupal.org/project/media_brightcove
