When I use the image module Images upload, but when I go to their node the text appears but the images do not. I can't view the images in any web browser (firefox ro IE) and get a 403 error when I try their direct URL. The filer permissions come out as 644 with public reading allowed, I have manually set the file permisions to 755 and I am still not allowed to see the photos. I can download the photos by FTP and they look exactly as they should. The exact error page I get from my browser is:
-----------------
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /test/drupal/files/images/62-13-MacoM-01.thumbnail.jpg on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I havn't modified my drupal very much I am running 4.6.5 with the latest image module 4.6. I would consider my site pretty vanilla.

I am using a few extra modules: poll, profile, queue, search, statistics, story, system, taxonomy, blog, comment, contact, excerpt, forum, help, image, menu, node, og, page. Organic groups is about the only exotic thing in there.

An example of what happens is at:

I tried disabling all but the very basic modules, no dice. I placed another image by FTP into the folder and when I try to view it I get the forbidden page (though the file permissions should allow me to see it). Could it be a problem with my .htaccess file?

I completely delete the .htaccess file, no dice. I change the permissions for the /files/ directory to all read write, no dice.

Ok I found the problem though I don't understand it. When I set my "images" folder to public exicute I am able to view the images. Does this make any sense?

The folder is set to 745 and then I can view the images. I don't especially like having public exicute on any of my folders.

Can you solve this problem? My general administrator has updated the OS Apache and all images galleries are damage. I'm tried change permisions to 777 but "image" folder not changed. SOLUTION: I dont know what happen but I rename "images" folder to "images2" and all images are lost but the image module is working again
