I am working on drupal 6.x . I downloaded the relevant DHTML module and then saved configuration in the Modules (under Site Building in the Administer )section.
The message succesfully saved. I am using powerful websites drupal 6.pdf for reference.
Then when I went to the blocks section the DHTML menu was not to be found.
The DHTML though worked somehow even then for some time, but further addtion of forms made it stop working.

amit_at_drupal commentedAdditional Note:
Also the administration page viewed by Module
didn't show the option of Replace Navigation block.
Only showed the DHTML Menu.

cburschkaIt appears you are using information that is nearly a year out of date. Please always read the module's help text and project page for inquiries, as these are kept up to date. In this case, DHTML Menu has not had any replacement blocks since version 6.x-3.0, and it starts working (or is supposed to) as soon as it is enabled.
Edit: Didn't mean to snap. It's just that I've had to answer around five or six issues like this one. :)

optura commentedthe version 6.x-3.4 of DHTML module produces (in my case at least) an extra line on the menu, when in effect, repeating the primary links on its secondary ones

Ann Williams commentedThe reason why so many people keep asking this question is because it is in Pakt Publishing's "Building Powerful and robust websites with Drupal 6" by David Mercer. This is of course a very popular book for absolute newbies like myself - who don't necessarily know how to find all of the notes that go with the modules.
Personally, I went to the downloads section, searched for the DHTML, read the Release Notes (which say nothing about there no longer being blocks) and downloaded the 6.35 version.... All which is basically what the book told us to do.
I think the thing here is that when you are an absolute beginner anything like this can really make one a bit frantic about what is going on. After much scratching around the Search I finally found this thankfully.
Just a hint to new users - go to http://drupal.org/node/102360/revisions and look under the revisions for 10/04/2009 at 8:12 for the note about there no longer being blocks.
Ps. I will also send Packt Publishing a note about this so that they can see whether David Mercer can update the book. Thanks
