Social networking is many things and covers a variety of functionality. You are probably looking for a set of modules, the set though depends on the functionality you seek.

You can use the og module and this will work for setting up groups, etc. Check out my website and you will find a book that you can buy on line that is in expense, "The Ultimate Community Builder" and then you can get a good idea. http://www.ohbytheway.biz
