Hi,

I've developed a website on a local test server and now need to find a host.

The organisation I work for would probably want the site to be hosted by a big name hosting provider with big infrastructure behind it. Does anyone use such a provider (and can you recommend) and are these big providers suitable homes for building my Drupal site.

What sort of hosting package would I need to go for to run my Drupal site?

There seems to be simple hosting packages, virtual servers, and dedicated servers. Is one more preferable to another?

Also, when contacting a big hosting company, are there any Drupal specific requirements that I need to ensure are available which might not normally be available?

What do I need to ensure I have access to to run Drupal 6.x?

Also, and this is my last question I promise, I'm familiar with Windows and not Linux. Is Drupal just as good running on Windows?

I use the Baby Croc package. It has all you need, and is very affordable. I would just go with a Linux server as they are just better servers overall. As for being a noob, that is no problem as they have Cpanel on the backend, so everything is all menu based and you don't need to know Linux. Grab yourself an FTP client like Filezilla and you should be all set. Hope that helps :)

Do you know your traffic? For a beginner, I would like recommend bluehost, hostgator.

But if you have considerable traffic and need to go with VPS hosting or dedicated hosting, you can try 1and1 and midphase.
