I ran the update as usual to v. 5.x-4.5 and now available updates is telling me that v. 5.x-4.4 is the recommended version. Is 4.5 not ready for prime time?

That happens when you upgrade the module right after release, and the Drupal update system itself hasn't had time to crawl it's modules yet for the latest release..

It should be fixed by now, if not, for sure within 24 hours it will be.
