is there any way to add a free text field for users to enter search terms on the biblio/filter page?

Anything is possible :-), but it's not currently built into the 5.x series, the standard Drupal search should work though.

This feature exists in 6.x, but I'm not sure how much work it would be to back port it.

is there a way to combine filters as well instead of having to do only one filter each time?

Upgrade to Biblio 6x and use Views.
