Insert and refer to JavaScript

From reading through a few posts it seems I'm able to add javascript to the theme page.tpl.php.

Instructions for the code said add this in between the header tag.

Then add this anywhere else

Recommend this Page to a Friend!

The first part went fine, I edited the page.tpl.php file.

Then I tried to add the second part(the link) to a node to test it. It won't alllow me to add it no matter if I pick full html or php. It won't save it, keeps saying page not found.

Am I trying something that's not possible or inserting it in the wrong spot?

This code allows my user to forward a page link using their default email.
