Seems like this should be easy, but maybe not...

I have a taxonomy menu created using the default menu path type, and
the corresponding taxonomy/term/{termid} paths have catpath aliases
generated by pathauto. So the menu link is to {catpath url} corresponding
to taxonomy/term/{termid}.

I want to point some of the menu links to nodes rather than taxonomy
terms, so the menu would be to node/{nodeid} rather than taxonomy/term/{termid}.

So, what's the best way to do this?

You would have to use the taxonomy menu api with hook_taxonomy_menu_path (http://drupal.org/node/380652) in a custom module.

You could also create a new term per node that you wanted to appear in the menu.

When I was searching for a module for a different project I found node_menu (http://drupal.org/project/node_menu). It may be what you are looking for.

Can that be done, with the term's item in the menu linking directly to the node?
