I have been playing around with SimpleNews 5.x and noticed that there is a statistics module that goes with 6.x but don't want to upgrade my whole site. is it possible to use a 6.x module with a 5.x site? or is there anyone using a good blast email system in 5.x that has statistics built in?

You can not use a 6.x module with 5.x core.
