I thought of starting a similar thread with this same question... Looking for a host also (shared, VPS, etc) that people have experience running solr on.
Are there hosts out there who will just run the search service for you and allow remote connections to solr if you aren't able to run/configure Java apps?
Maybe this bump for the thread will yield a couple of answers? Thanks to anyone with ideas.
Well there are two possible answers I have discovered.
1) I have just upgraded to a VPS solution - costs more but I have root access and can install whatever I like, which would include Tomcat and Apache Solr. not that I want to go down that road... more maintenance than I want to deal with.
2) Then there is this from Acquia. Look at the search product. The company - established by the always to be honoured Dries Buytaert himself - actually provides precisely that service: offline search using web services to pass search criteria and retrieve results. It's not cheap, but hey! You get what you pay for...
I would like to go "next level" also and move from shared bluehost to something which let me use:
1 solr
2 ffmpeg
So I understand now I need to go to VPS , becasue deciated are really expensive and actually my traffic is not so high to get whole machine just for this site.
Am I right ? What should I know before buying next hosting ?
I know you guys have experience already with that, could you share a little of it ?
As I understand it you don't have to use the Acquia build of Drupal, but you do have to sign up for their search service and it is not cheap. You could of course try configuring it yourself, by finding a hoster that would give you a vanilla Tomcat/Solr installation I suppose.
Well that's not great. I'm surprised that not many of the hosting services advertising here do not offer Solr support. It would seem like a logical service to offer as well as profitable, as it seems Drupal is moving to Solr based search or at least dedicated-server based search options.
Actually, the Acquia-Drupal service is not THAT expensive all things considered; it all depends what your use-case and financials are. My problem is that I have a multi-lingual site where each language is identified by subdomain (there are four main languages), and for Acquia that means four sites - ie cost times four. Given the nature of my sites (non-commercial), I just couldn't justify the cost. But I've had a look at the cost of hosting with Tomcat (as I understand it SOLR runs under Tomcat) and Acquia compares pretty well, especially given that they help you set everything up.
My firm recommends Acquia hosting for all our clients that can need 24/7 site support. It's a fantastic value for the price. We do offer solid Managed Drupal & Solr hosting to our clients that can't use Acquia as an option. Details of our service can be found on our site www.herringconsulting.com
Since the discussion is quite old, I am sure you have found the best option for you. However, for other visitors of this page let me briefly introduce our new hosting company at http://drupion.com We offer Drupal hosting with Apache Solr Search at very much competitive prices. By this we don't imply to compete with the Drupal Hosting industry giants like Acquia, but we are pretty good on providing quality hosting for the Drupal users, who would like to have extra features like Apache Solr Search, Varnish, APC, etc activated in addition to their usual Drupal installations and who do not need or can not afford going for more expensive hosting solutions.

I too am looking for Drupal
I too am looking for Drupal hosting with Apache Solr support. I don't expect much traffic to start off but would like to the available options.
Does the Acquia option require you to be an Acquia subscriber to reap the benefits of Solr support?

Solr search is already included in our DrupalCONCEPT PRO/shared hosting package (for 1 website). With DrupalCONCEPT PRO/dedicated, Solr is optional and then unmetered.

no root access?
I would expect root access would be included for a 300 euros/m hosting package...
