If you have the module
If you have the module installed properly and can access it via yoursite.com/admin/settings/xmlsitemap then all you need to do is sign up for google webmaster tools (just google "submit sitemap to google" think it's the first one that comes up). Google then provides a filename for verification - just add this in the appropriate section within the module and it should be up and running. Let me know if you need any further details!

XML Sitemap
Hi Allan,
I can access yoursite.com/admin/settings/xmlsitemap and all seems fine there
I am registered with Google. Google asks for the path to the sitemap. It does not auto generate the sitemap name. I guess a name would not stop the Drupal from generating the sitemap. I chose the name as "google-sitemap-pages" and hence my url would be http://netelements.net/google-sitemap-pages and the url probably should be returning some more important information other than "Hello, Google!"
btw, I am using Drupal 6.x and XML Sitemap is only development snapshot for 6.x http://drupal.org/project/xmlsitemap
Hence I guess is the issue.

Has your site been verified
Has your site been verified "OK" by Google. The reason Google asks you to create a file with a specific name (which is what the sitemap module will do for you) is simply to prove that you do actually have access to the site as an admin etc. I'll break down the steps I took...if you follow these it should work i think....
On your Google Webmaster Dashboard, enter the name of your site and click "Add Site"
It will the ask you to verify the site, it is in here that google will provide you with a specific html filename. This file needs to be in your root directory in order to verify the site. The filename will be something like google[large string of numbers].html
In the "Search Engines" tab of the sitemap module you can enter this filename and the module will generate the necessary file for you. Assuming you have checked the "Submit sitemap to Google" the site map can be set to submit to Google whenever Cron runs or when you update content within your site. You can also submit the site manually to google if everything is running properly, the URL will be www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. This is quite useful to do when you first set it up as Cron may not run straight away etc...
Does this help you at all?

I have the verification file.
I have the verification file. And the site is already in google dashboard
And also have the sitemap url returning the content. just that it is not proper. I guess i just need to wait till the module is released for 6.x

I guess so, Im not really
I guess so, Im not really sure, sounds like a plausible explanation though. The site I am running www.TotalHolidayExperience.com is running on 5x, purely because I wanted something in place quickly due to development time constraints, and couldn't really afford to wait on further module development fo 6x, and I don't currently posses the skills/knowledge to start contributing modules.
If you visit the URL of your sitemap (i.e. www.yoursite/sitemap.xml) i'm guessing this is where you are getting the "Hello Google" when it should be displaying the relevant sitemap info - sounds as if it is just because the module is not finished...

Same issue resolved
Hello.
I'm a newbee too...
I had the same issue here and I managed to solve it quite easily.
Here's the story:
I activated the module for google and I called my verification link "sitemap" on the sttings of my "XMLsitemap module"; but in fact I had already a sitemap displayed on that same url with the help of the "sitemap module" (not xmlsitemap - the other module).
When I came again to visit the sitemap i was able to see the same output "Hello Google" on a completly blank page instead of my beautifull normal sitemap.
Just tried to change the name without writting "sitemap" in the xmlsitemap and all was correct again.
I guess you just can't name your verification file as a know url of your site...
