How do I patch a module?

I want to use the hidden field patch and then use the post rank module, but I don't know where I'm supposted to 'put the patch'.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I spent hours trying to figure out how to patch a file. No amount of searching made it clear to me. Eventualy someone answered my post and helped me.
